After truckloads of success from its run at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition is coming to London. The sell-out New York Show drove the masses into a frenzy, and it soon became the Costume Institute’s most popular exhibition ever.
Opening in March this year, the exhibition has been greeted with unparalleled demand, and as such it has been extended for an extra two weeks, accompanied by the release of 50,000 additional tickets. The London exhibition is to be held at the Victoria & Albert Museum, and will now run until 2 August 2015.
Director of the V&A, Martin Roth, has spoken about the high levels of anticipation coming from the public, and has assured people that they can still get tickets. “We are committed to providing access to as many as possible during its 20-week run and so pleased to now offer many more opportunities to see this magnificent show in London.”
The London version of the exhibition is said will be even bigger than New York’s, which boasted 100 looks and 70 accessories created by the esteemed designer, mostly from the runway. Londoners will also be treated to an almost life-sized tribute to one of McQueen’s most adored friends, Kate Moss, in the form of a striking hologram. This is after the “Tinkerbell-sized” Kate Moss hologram that closed the designer’s Widows of Culloden Autumn/Winter 2006-2007 show.
The exhibition has already broken the V&A’s record for the most ever advance sales, having sold over 30,000 tickets since going on sale last year. These have been bought by passionate enthusiasts in 57 different countries, with the most sales outside of the UK coming from America and Ireland.
