Michael Moore Unveils His New Documentary

He has been one of the most prolific and controversial documentary filmmakers since the 90’s with such incendiary productions as Fahrenheit 9/11, Bowling For Columbine, and Roger and Me – now Michael Moore has just announced his latest project ‘Where to Invade Next?’

As the title would suggest the film will be focused on US foreign policy and the country’s extensive history in global conflicts.

Moore unveiled the project at the recent Toronto International Film Festival and said during a live streamed Q&A, “The issue of the United States in infinite war is something that has concerned me for quite some time, and provides the necessary satire for this film.” The Hollywood reporter has reported that the filmmaker was able to keep the project under wraps right up until the announcement on Tuesday morning.

Moore went on to say, “Now the secret is out: I have a new movie. We’re very excited about having the premier in Toronto. I’ve been very quiet about the making of this film. You probably haven’t seen much of me…We’ve been very diligent about keeping this under cover.”

There doesn’t appear to be any single major event which inspired Moore to make this film but rather it has been the overall culture of American international conflict which has dominated much of the news this century.

“We’ve all been living in this time, certainly since 9/11, and everything that’s going on in this country, in this constant need to always have an enemy – where’s our next enemy? – so we can keep this whole military industrial complex alive, and keep the companies that make a lot of money in business.”

It looks like Moore hasn’t tampered with his winning model and has included much of his production team from previous films in the making of Where To Invade Next.

The Toronto Film Festival documentary programmer, Thom Powers, has said that he still can’t believe Moore was able to keep his latest film a secret until Tuesday morning. Apparently Powers had screened the documentary a couple of weeks ago in New York City after Moore rang him to flag the project. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “I was hugely impressed. It’s very funny. It’s very timely. It’s going to be a big conversation starter this fall. It will attract a lot of attention around the globe. It’s up there with Michael’s best work.”
