Patrick Demarchelier is an icon within the fashion photography industry. From working at Vogue and Harpers Bazaar to shooting campaigns for the likes of Dior, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, Demarchelier has shot for the best and biggest in the fashion industry. He is set to unveil a rare collection of photos in New York this coming October.
The showcase at Christies, New York is set to be a retrospective exhibition looking back at Demarchelier’s work from 1975-2015. The exhibition will present the French photographers timeless imagery, showing the portraits of some of the greatest models and celebrities including Princess Diana, Johnny Depp, Gisele Bundchen and more.
Fashion royalty Anna Wintour can only speak highly of the man, who inspired her during the early days of her career.
“Patrick takes simple photographs perfectly, which is of course immensely difficult. Working without ornate settings, often in black-and-white, he makes attractive women look beautiful and beautiful women seem real.”
Patrick Demarchelier has been shaping the way we view fashion for four decades, and says that “The key to a strong portrait lies in the truth of the subject, for people to be who they are, to be themselves.”
Christies will be exhibiting more than 75 of his iconic images, with various different subjects ranging from portraits to nature to nudes. Lasting from the 2nd to the 12th of October Demarchelier says the gallery will hold some surprises.
“I like to mix pictures—old and new. I don’t like looking back, but always focus on looking to the future.”
Vogue’s photography director, Ivan Show, speaks of Demarchelier’s work highly: “It feels modern — because it’s timelessly classic.”
The exhibition is set to draw in some big names, and with the photography legend premiering some unseen works, this is surely a showcase to keep your eye on.
