Winston Surfshirt is a Sydney-based 5-piece band who have recently impressed one of Australia’s leading music advisers Astral Records.
The group is self-described as “the auditory equivalent of A Tribe Called Quest splitting spliffs with your parent’s favourite band,” and they’re not wrong. Find yourself getting lost in a halcyon daze with their first track, “Be About You”. The funky summer classic features a convivial synth and rapping vocals reminiscent of Anderson .Paak.
The band’s first single, which tantalizingly illustrates their Hip Hop and soul influences, has become an immediate hit. The song has been played on the local Triple J rotation and it debuted at number 1 on the Australian Spotify Viral Charts, as well as reaching airwaves in LA.
Astral Records has described Winston Surfshirt as “one of the most exciting acts we’ve heard out of Australia in a long time with an incredible live show to match”. Astral Records have signed some major Australian acts including Basenji, Cosmo’s Midnight, Roland Tings and Wave Racer.
In celebration of the band’s new single, Astral Records announced a party at the local music haunt, The Newtown Social Club in March, which has already sold out.
