While the third season of American Crime Story unfortunately isn’t due until late 2018, Entertainment Weekly has been so kind as to give us a small glimpse of the cast of this season’s examination: Versace/Cunanan.
Gianni Versace’s assassination in 1997 has aleady been examined and re-enacted by a number of crime shows (Dateline, 48 Hours) so it was only a matter of time before it received the American Crime Story treatment.
Entertainment Weekly has kindly provided a tantalising glimpse of the cast in character:
Edgar Ramirez (The Gold, The Girl on the Train) will be playing Gianni Versace, the world-renowned fashion designer who was murdered outside of his home in 1997.
Oscar winning actress Penélope Cruz has been cast as the iconic designer Donatella Versace (sister of Gianni), rocking her signature bleach-blonde locks, heavy eye-makeup and permanent tan.
Darren Criss (Glee, American Horror Story: Hotel) as Andrew Cunanan, Versace’s killer who had been on a serial killing spree leading up to the prominent figure’s assassination. Cunanan committed suicide nine days following Versace’s murder, as Miami Police were in the midst of a massive manhunt for the serial killer.
Grammy award winner Ricky Martin has been cast as Gianni’s longtime partner and model muse, Antonio D’Amico. The pair met in 1982, and D’Amico became a designer for the Versace sport line.
The third instalment of American Crime Story is said to be based on the book Vulgar Favors by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth published in 2000, and will explore Versace’s assassin, Andrew Cunanan – in particular, how he was able to evade capture during his 1997 killing spree.
American Crime Story: Versace/Cunanan is scheduled for release in late 2018, so we still have a long wait ahead. Thankfully, the image of a speedo-clad Ricky Martin should quench our thirst until then.
