We don’t know about you but the list of movies that revolve around the theme of the ‘reoccurring day’ is getting a bit long. But nonetheless, clear a space on that list for the new movie Happy Death Day.
Played by La La Land’s Jessica Rothe, a college student is stuck reliving the day of her murder. The film, which is directed by Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) and written by Scott Lobdell, explores exceptional and terrifying details in an attempt for Rothe’s character, Tree Gelbman to discover her killer’s identity.
While the film may look like a fresh, new horror film, it is the mere overdoing of the same theme over and over again that has us asking whether it is worth going back for more. The popular theme has been seen in movies like Groundhog Day, Before I Fall, Naked, Edge of Tomorrow, Looper, Dead End, just to name a few. In fact, with further research, it was found that thirty-six films dating all the way back to 1933, have all consisted of the same theme of the reoccurring day that the characters are forced to relive until they self-reflect or make some sort of change in their life to break the time loop.
Until screenwriters figure out the unoriginality of this theme, we shall keep our fingers crossed that some form of the movie makes it stand out from the rest. Until then, see the trailer below.
