The art of photography has been completely revolutionised through the rise of social media and other creative apps. So much so that anyone with a passion for photography can create art with their cameras and phones, whether that be as a hobby or in a professional capacity. Australia is currently teeming with young photographers who have more than mastered the craft, let’s take a look at the talent behind the lens…
The following photographers have also taken on various different roles like acting, directing and cinematography, each of them also presents their work on various different platforms such as social media, their own websites, in galleries and media outlets.
Nirrimi Hakanson
Aussie-based Nirrimi Hakanson has dragged her lens all over the globe, collating a portfolio that boasts brilliant shots of First Aid Kit’s US Tour, and campaigns for Diesel and Billabong. However, it could be argued that her best work is ‘Fire and Joy’ – her online journal and portfolio. Fire & Joy offers a deeply intimate look into Nirrimi’s life through written stories and incredibly surreal yet delicate photos.
Freya Esders
The best way to describe Freya Esders’ work is that it captures the youth culture of today to a tee. Her pictures depict people from all works of life, including; artists, filmmakers and activists. Freya’s work can also be found on her Instagram, her Tumblr page and i-D magazine where she frequently features. Freya also has a collection of short films that uniquely spin yarns of times past, or promote products like Aliange Skincare. One of Freya’s best projects is her feature piece with i-D magazine called ‘My Crew: Freya Esders’ Friends Just Wanna Kiss And Start Fires’. This features photos of Freya’s friends accompanying a short interviews that in essence, capture her diverse and varied relationships.
Jake Coombes
Jake Coombes has travelled all over the world mastering his art along the way. Most of Coombes’ work features black and white prints that depict city living in Ho Chi Minh City, Fes el Bali (Morocco) and Japan. Coombes has also tried his hand at filmmaking and animation with a variety of short, quirky animations and films that capture nightlife, history and life in other countries. The majority of Jake’s work is featured on his website that displays different galleries for different projects. One of his projects is ‘Open Road, Seldom Touched’ which follows Nikesh Tandukar, a 21-year old Nepalese man and his Enfield motorcycle. These images capture the colours and emotions that felt when when riding the great open road, accompanied by quotes from Tandukar.
Alison Adriano
Alison Adriano is an actress/ director/ artist who has delved into photography has part of her art. Her photography focuses on various different themes including landscapes, self-portraits and youth culture. She also uses a variety of different cameras in her photo shoots including 35mm film, DLSR and iPhone. Most of her work is published on her website, with one of her more notable projects ‘Aussie Luv’ featured in i-D magazine. This project captures images of diverse couples with a small dialogue about their partner and relationship.
Patricia Casten
Patricia Casten is freelance photographer based in Melbourne who has taken her craft all over the world. Casten has worked for a variety of different companies and media outlets, generating a diverse portfolio featuring fashion, youth culture and the world around us. Her work can be found on her social media accounts, with the majority of her portfolio featured on her personal website. One of her more eye-catching projects is ‘Visual Diary’ featured on her website. This anthology of sorts compiles a vast array of images she has taken throughout her career – featuring stunning landscapes, ecstatic images of youth culture and adventurous shots of travelling.
