The recent accusations of sexual misconduct slapped against Kevin Spacey have resulted in suspension of the final season of everyone’s favourite political drama. So what will become of House of Cards?
Kevin Spacey has joined the ranks of famous men toppled by Weinstein-worthy allegations of sexual misconduct and while the whole thing is awful on so many levels the dominant question on everyone’s lips is ‘what’s going to happen with House of Cards?’
Last week Netflix announced its cutting ties with the disgraced actor adding that -in addition to the final season of the popular political drama – the company would not be releasing the film Gore, which was produced by Spacey and sees him star as the late writer, Gore Vidal. This comes as no surprise, but it still would have been a kick in the gut for Spacey as the film was already in post-production.
But on the subject of House of Cards there has been little comment as to the state of the show’s future and the information we do have is vague at best. In a statement released by Netflix last Friday they say,
“Netflix will not be involved with any further production of House of Cards that includes Kevin Spacey.”
However, there is no hint that the show has sunk completely with Spacey’s departure.
“MRC, in partnership with Netflix, will continue to evaluate a creative path forward for the program during the hiatus.” – Netflix
Fans of the show thus sit and stew in uncertainty and tension, wondering what “creative path” the producers will take. Will they simply cast another actor and get an Oscar-winning makeup artist to make him look like Spacey? Will the writers go the Charmed way and idly mention his death in the first episode like when Shannen Doherty went? Or will they do the unthinkable and go for the –increasingly eerie – digital imaging that Disney opted for in Civil War and Pirates 5? We can only hope that’s not the case!
