The Incredibles 2 Trailer Is Here, So Get Ready To Bulldoze Over Little Kids At The Theatre

The long-awaited trailer for Incredibles 2 dropped last weekend. After waiting almost 15 years for a sequel it’s safe to say that not only children, but Millennials alike, will be filing into cinemas to catch the new film!

ICYMI (if so, watch it ASAP!)  the original The Incredibles movie that released in 2004 centred around the character of former superhero ‘Mr. Incredible’ (secret identity, Bob Parr). Mr Incredible is forced to go underground along with all the other superheroes, after the Government implements a Superhero Relocation Program to protect ‘Supers’ after public opinion turns against them.

Fifteen years pass by, and still trying to settle into suburban life with his wife Helen (formerly, ‘Elastigirl’) and his children Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack – Bob finds himself fed up. Until he is given the opportunity to relive his “glory days” and become Mr.Incredible again!

Although it all turns upside down pretty quickly, his family is there to support him as he attempts to defeat the supervillian ‘Syndrome’. Long story short, the reputation of the Supers is somewhat restored through their heroic efforts, and they begin to take on other villains popping up to save the people of Metroville.

However, the newest trailer for the sequel Incredibles 2 posits that there is still much left to do! The follow-up film appears to focus on Elastigirl as the face of an effort to “bring Supers back into the spotlight”, relegating Bob to the household to look after the children.

It’s a unique situation: especially for a film supposedly set in 1962, which was discovered from an obscure detail in a newspaper in the first film – a detail that literally everyone missed. It’s apparent that neither Helen or Bob are very comfortable in their new roles, with Helen stressing over the fact that “to help my family I’ve gotta leave it, to fix the law I’ve gotta break it”. Bob is also shown to be sporting dark circles down to his chin, as he strives to look after the kids with the same grace as their mother.

It speaks to the progression of the last fifteen years, in which (traditional) parental role reversals are becoming exceedingly common and a topical debate, but not really understood on a basic level. Incredibles 2 helps us with this insight while also dealing with the responsibility of defeating a new supervillain, ‘Screen Slaver’. Oh, and attempting to change the world’s perception of Supers, “so (the) kids can have that choice”, and live their life freely in the future.

There are many amazing moments and callbacks to the original movie, including the mystery of Jack-Jack’s superpowers, the legendary Edna Mode, and of course Frozone and his wife (at least her voice), continuing the “Honey, where is my Supersuit?” bit from the last film.
