Sydney’s Vivid festival is a spirited celebration of light, music and ideas. Set to the mood of a not-so-cruel Australian winter, the harbour city is set to stir once again in nocturnal incandescence.
2019’s rendition will take place on the 24th of May and illuminate a city and let’s face it—in dire need, until the 15th of June. Millions are expected to bask in the iconic projections. Not just a pretty face, the festival will provide a platform for the world’s most interesting minds and artists.
With an alumnus of Kraftwerk, New Order and The Pixies, 2019 sees the lineup kick start in comparable meteoric fashion. The Cure will be bringing the heartache in goth-heavy spades as they celebrate the 30th anniversary of their landmark 1989 record Disintegration. To further this outstanding precedent, the nostalgic performance is billed as an international debut before it sets off around the world—though no other dates have been announced.
The Cure will be playing the hits with a full band, featuring lead singer Robert Smith alongside Simon Gallup, Jason Cooper, Roger O’Donnell and Reeves Gabrels. The enigmatic and 80s icon, Smith holds fond memories of Vivid—“Our Reflections shows in 2011 were truly memorable experiences, and with the excitement surrounding those early album performances in mind we are more than delighted to be announcing our return.”
In what is an eagerly anticipated lineup each year, Aussie music fans are sat tight waiting for the full lineup. If this first announcement is anything to go off, we’re in for a spectacular winter of aural treats. While the musical lineup tends to remain an annual smorgasbord of stellar proportions, the event planning for foot traffic did come under fire at the 2018 event. Hopefully council and event organisers cater for the heavy attendance expected at 2019’s event.
