The second season of the Amazon Prime Original The Boys is on its way, and looks brutally intense. What can we expect in Season 2?
The Amazon Prime series The Boys premiered in July last year, and is coming back soon for a second season. Based on the comics of the same name, the show is about a world where superheroes exist, and are admired and idolised by the public. What most of the world doesn’t realise is that the world’s most famous superhero group, ‘The Seven’, are corrupt and evil, and pose a major threat to society.
The group that knows about their insanity are regular human vigilantes who go by ‘The Boys’, and vow to take the superheroes down. It stars New Zealand actor Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, the violent leader of The Boys, who despises and distrusts all superheroes. For me, Urban’s performance as Butcher was easily the greatest part of the show.
The first season is incredibly fun, and fans and critics alike have praised the series for its smart and subversive take on the superhero genre. We always see superheroes portrayed as, well, heroes, but have you ever wondered what would happen if they started to abuse their powers? Well, that’s what The Boys is all about, and the so-called superheroes are indeed the villains of this show. The Seven are led by the psychopathic superhero Homelander (played by Antony Starr), who is without a doubt the most intriguing and frightening villain I’ve seen in a long time.
Season 2 is on its way, but an official release date is yet to be announced. Regarding its release, showrunner Eric Kripke has tweeted:
“I get asked a lot, so The Boys update: finishing season 2 remotely. Still some VFX & sound to do, but we’re so close! Airdate (& other cool shit) will be announced soon!”
As usual, plot details are kept under wraps. The majority of the main cast will return, including Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid as Hughie, and Antony Starr as Homelander, as well as some new additional characters.
The Boys Season 2: What to Expect
Without spoiling anything, Season 1 ended in a completely unexpected way, and it certainly raises a lot of questions for Billy Butcher. In Season 2, it’s expected that he’ll have to face some unpleasant truths about himself, and will grow even more reckless in his rivalry with Homelander and The Seven. The Season 2 teaser only shows momentary glimpses, but it nevertheless shows some brutal action going on, which is always fun.
So, it goes without saying that The Boys’ mission to take down The Seven will continue in the second season, with things getting more complicated and life-threatening for the group as they make new shocking discoveries.
The show is definitely an interesting concept, and it’s far from similar to what you’ve seen in Marvel or DC movies. And besides the whole superhero aspect, the show is hilarious at times and surprisingly emotional, which blends well with the action. The season ahead will be crazy, and I can’t wait to see how they expand upon the first season.
