Award-winning singer-songwriter SZA has shared a new chilled out R&B release ‘Hit Different’ featuring Ty Dolla $ign.
The new track ‘Hit Different’ incorporates smooth hip-hop beats, a slow rhythm, and harmonious vocals from both highly talented artists that have created an ambient and mesmeric single. The song also comes with an accompanying artistic music video featuring both artists in a car junkyard with SZA flaunting her moves and charismatic stage presence.
‘Hit Different’ was produced by the American production duo the Neptunes consisting of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo. In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, SZA revealed that working with the Neptunes was an amazing and influential recording experience for the artist.
“I can’t really wrap my head around the experience and I think more so I’m fangirling off of having a track produced by probably the most formative producers and artists for me when I was growing up,” she said.
This new track is a groove infused tune that slows down the tempo with SZA’s stunning vocals and Ty’s chilled out verses at the forefront of this soulful R&B banger. ‘Hit Different’ is SZA’s first new music as lead artist since her 2017 Ctrl album, and is the first release since joining Justin Timberlake on ‘The Other Side’ from the Trolls World Tour and Kendrick Lamar on ‘All The Stars’ from Black Panther: The Album.
The accompanying music video was directed by SZA with artistic elements that exemplify the track’s classic R&B vibe. The video features the singer dancing with a group of women in a scrapyard, whilst also showing her in a field, on top of haystacks, and jamming out with Ty in a car junkyard.
SZA is known to explore many of life’s complicated experiences through her music, with this song being about a complicated love affair that “hits different”. Ty’s lyrics reflect the complications in the relationship with the artist singing; “hit different when I’m sittin’ here alone all by myself, hit different when I think you might be with somebody else.”
This multi-talented artist has been recognised for her amazing musical abilities with her debut album Ctrl landing No.1 on Billboard’s R&B Album Chart, No. 2 on the R&B/Hip Hop Album chart, and No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart. The singer was also nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars for her Black Panther collaboration with Kendrick Lamar in ‘All The Stars’.
In the near future, SZA has revealed that she has new music in the works with Pharrell, Sia, and Timberland as well as collaborations with Jhené Aiko, Megan Thee Stallion, Kehlani, and Lizzo on the way.
