The Fashion Awards for 2020 worked a little differently this year. But then, nothing in 2020 really functioned as it usually would so how surprised can we really be.
The Fashion Awards organised by the British Fashion Council were streamed online, as many fashion and award shows have been this year. The biggest change, however, was the categories in which the prizes were allocated. Rather than presenting awards like ‘Designer of the Year’ and ‘British Emerging Talent’, this year’s format had just four categories with five winners in each.
I suppose this avoids having an incident like Daniel Lee’s full house sweep last year from happening again. Celebrity hosts such as Priyanka Chopra, Maisie Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Aja Barber and Rosalia announced the selection of each honoured designer, declaring them a winner in their own right rather than ranking them in their chosen categories.
The categories were: Community, Creativity, Environment, and People. Each winner was nominated by 800 members of the international fashion community on the basis of their active contribution to key conversations within the fashion industry this year.
