The biopic about hip-hop group N.W.A is set to win the weekend against spy thriller as both hit theatres for the first time.
N.W.A or Niggaz Wit Attitudes were an American hip-hop group from Compton, California. The members were: Dr Dre, Ice Cube, Easy-E, DJ Yella, and MC Ren. They were active for a five-year period from 1986-1991 and were renowned for their explicit lyrics and seen as a defining artist in the gangsta rap genre. They were banned from mainstream American radio stations and were known to hate the police system. Despite this they sold over 10 million records in the U.S alone. Rolling Stone ranked them within their top 100 artists of all time at 83. Now they’re getting their debut on the big screen.
The film is receiving positive reception and publicity so far and seems like it will provide some timely social commentary about the divide between black society and police in America right now. It is expected to drag in $43 million in its first three days. The trailer even comes with an intro from Ice Cube and Dr. Dre.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, a notoriously witty and slick director, ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E’ also sees its debut this weekend. It is based on a TV series of the same name from the 1960’s. It follows an American agent as he teams up with a Russian to thwart the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
Starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer it’s expected to see a more modest return of $16 million, although it has also been viewed favourably by critics so far and looks like a lot of fun for audiences so don’t be surprised to see that figure go higher.
It’s a quiet time of year for the cinema and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is expected to take third place for the weekend with no other major productions set to debut.
