Initially the film was slated for a Mid-March 2020 release. However, due to the covid-19 pandemic, the film’s debut was postponed. A total of three projected dates were announced over the last year.

September 4 2020

Positioned at the start of the US Labour Day Weekend, Paramount were hoping that the effects of Covid-19 would have subsided. The studio anticipated a return by the public to cinemas by the projected date. This was despite prior history indicating that this time period was the lowest for movie attendees. However, the worsening impact of the pandemic would contribute to the film’s release being pushed back.

April 23 2021

As September approached, its viability as a release date seemed less likely. Cinemas in the US and Canada had not been open for months due to the virus outbreak. In July Paramount decided to move the film’s release date to April 23 of the following year. This decision came after Warner Bros. Pictures and Disney had chosen to withdraw their films which were planned for cinematic release around the same time.

September 17 2021

Similar circumstances would occur for the April release date. Despite some cinemas reopening, they yielded low ticket sales. A continued surge of infections in the US would also give the studio no other option than to once again move the date. In January 2021, Paramount announced a September 17 2021 theatrical release.

After the various setbacks concerning the film’s release date, Director John Krasinski took to twitter to deliver some good news:

Pushing the film forward to May 28 2021 was directly linked to the news that more theatres were reopened, or planned to reopen, in the New York and Los Angeles areas.

Returning and New Characters

Actors Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe will return as Evelyn Abbott, Regan Abbott and Marcus Abbott respectively. The sequel will continue to follow the family introduced in the original film, as well as the aftermath of the film’s events. John Krasinkski will reprise his role of Lee Abbott in flashbacks, and will once again direct the film.

Cillian Murphy will portray Emmet, a character who will help the family overcome new dangers beyond the monsters of the first film.

Impact

Fan reaction to the trailers was mainly positive. Many were excited to see returning characters and what the new film had to offer. Though some took note of something else. Viewers observed the significant increase in dialogue compared to the previous movie’s trailer. This lead to some light-hearted jests. One viewer joked:

“When a quiet place isn’t quiet”

Paramount Studios also plan to make the film available on their streaming platform Paramount + 45 days after its cinematic release.
