The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has opened its newest exhibit, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. The exhibit pays tribute to the late fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, who was known for his contributions to the fashion industry as the creative director of Chanel, Fendi, and more. It runs from the 5th of May to the 16th of July.
Nearly 200 pieces of Karl Lagerfeld’s designs are on display, many of which have never been seen before. The pieces are curated to showcase Lagerfeld’s unique style and his ability to blend traditional couture techniques with contemporary designs. The exhibit is a celebration of Lagerfeld’s influence on the fashion industry and his ability to push boundaries and challenge the status quo.
The Met Gala served as the official unveiling of the exhibit, with attendees paying homage to Lagerfeld’s legacy by donning his designs. The theme, “A Line of Beauty,” is taken from William Hogarth’s 1753 treatise on aesthetics, in which he describes a line that is both “serpentine and undulating” as being the epitome of beauty.
Inside the Exhibition
The exhibition showcases several sections, each highlighting a different aspect of Lagerfeld’s design philosophy. This approach allows visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Lagerfeld’s work, as they can explore the various influences and techniques that informed his designs.
For instance “Masculine Line/Feminine Line” and “Romantic Line/Military Line”. The first section focuses on his early designs. Subsequent sections showcase his work at Chanel, Fendi, and his own brand. Video interview footage of Karl’s seamstress appears above the dresses. In addition, the typical museum placards lay alongside the dresses featuring corresponding sketches. The exhibit also includes a section dedicated to Lagerfeld’s photography, which was a passion of his throughout his career.
Timeless Influence
Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute, discussed Lagerfeld’s significance in an interview with W Magazine. Evidently, according to Bolton, Lagerfeld’s ability to blend different styles and eras was a hallmark of his work. Lagerfeld’s immense impact on the fashion industry is evident through his ability to create designs that were both timeless and innovative. He became well-known for this unique talent, which allowed him to leave a lasting impression on the industry.
Consequently, the exhibit is expecting to draw a large crowd. That is to say, fashion enthusiasts and Lagerfeld fans are eager to pay tribute to the late designer’s legacy. The Met Gala, known for its extravagant costumes and high-profile attendees, is the perfect venue for the exhibition.
