Gothic setting, jewellery and masks suggesting torture, shiny leather, and very, very long dresses… Berlin-based photographer Martin Strauss leads us to his dark picture of beauty.
Martin Strauss, 31-year-old artist from Berlin, describes himself as a photographer who likes to ‘push the boundaries of photography a bit further’. Well, he seems to be pretty good at it. His latest collection, ‘Irresistible’, is around a biomechanical theme. It is a juxtaposition of both the soft beauty and aesthetics of fashion photography, and a kind of fantasy-like darkness.
The model, Deborah Frey, is wearing Struppets dresses, an avant-garde German label. Her never-ending dresses are flaunting in the wind, just like in a perfume commercial. But her elegance is obscured by the macabre masks designed by Fercho Ma Do. She is posing in front of a church, or inside some lugubrious machinery room. The result is surreal: raw and beautiful at the same time.
Martin Strauss might not be a big name in the fashion photography industry yet, but his work sure promises to be interesting.
