Brett Morgen’s documentary on the front-man of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, will reveal an unreleased 12 minute acoustic song. It’s been 21 years since Cobain’s death and Morgen has been the only director and writer to have the authorization from Cobain’s wife Courtney Love and his daughter, Frances, to make a film about his short-lived roller-coaster life.
The documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck will air on HBO on May 4. The song will be released to the public through the documentary at this time and will also feature on the documentaries soundtrack.
Courtney and Frances gave Morgen over 200 hours of unreleased footage to work with, ranging from Cobain’s childhood, interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and much more.
The documentary is named after Cobain’s mix-tape that the acoustic song is featured on, The Montage of Hell. Morgen will also be writing about extra details of Cobain’s life in a book that also shares the same name. Morgen gathered so much information about the lead singer that no-one else had before, it was decided that he would publish his findings.
Morgen interviewed Foo Fighters front-man Dave Grohl – Nirvana’s former drummer – for the documentary and although his interview did not make it in the film he plans to release an extended edition at a later date if possible.
