He Will, He Will, Rock You

He came out of nowhere, first appearing on season eight of American Idol in 2009 and now he’s singing with his all-time favourite band, Queen.

How can Adam Lambert hold a candle up to Freddie Mercury? The best place to find the answer to that question is to hear from the band members themselves and apparently it won’t be very difficult: 67-year-old guitarist Brian May describes Lambert as a “phenomenon.”

“We weren’t looking for another singer but Adam is kind of a gift from God. He has a technical ability beyond 99.9 per cent of singers in the world. You see that and can’t help but think, ‘I wonder what would happen if we opened that box again?’” Adam Lambert and Queen: The Telegraph

In a quote by Roger Taylor, who has been Queen’s drummer for over 45 years, he was lovingly nicknamed “Camp Elvis.”

“[Lambert’s] presence and charisma reminds me of Presley in so many ways; the look, the showmanship, the overtly sexual attitude. He is absolutely scintillating on stage, a voice in a million, and the same was true of Freddie. There are almost frightening similarities, especially socially, as an overtly gay man full of wit and banter. There are moments backstage when it seems like nothing has changed at all.”

While the two surviving members May and Taylor have noted countless times that Freddie remains irreplaceable, they know the value of Queen’s music and how much more rocking they have yet to do.

This is a stroke of luck or good judgement on Lambert’s part because his choice to sing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ at his American Idol audition evidently won him more than just four yes’s. It took Lambert six years to make it to the world stage – pretty good for a five year plan. In six years he went from a contestant on a talent show to being compared to his idol, even being accepted by Queen as the closest fit to the legend singer himself.

Ironically Simon Cowell’s remark about Lambert being too theatrical did nothing to dissuade the pop-star rocker. In fact Lambert’s theatrical showmanship is what landed him his dream gig in the end.
