The six year run of powerhouse 90’s television show Xena: Warrior Princess has been off the air for a decade and a half now. In that time the salivating pubescent male fans of the show have grown into awkward adults who silently wish their fiancés bore a golden breastplate and were a skilled blade-frisbee operators – or whatever that cool weapon was that Lucy Lawless used to dispense of half the bad guys in ancient Greece.
Sadly for those guys it doesn’t look like their fantasy of marrying the warrior babe will ever come to fruition but there is a silver lining, it looks like Xena will be returning to our screens soon!
Rumours of a reboot have been circulating for a while but it now looks like the project has been given the go ahead. The project is still in the early stages and NBC is looking for a writer to pen the story.
According to the Hollywood reporter the reboot will be more modern than the original but will still retain the trademark sass of the original actress Lucy Lawless:
“Sources say the new Xena would have to have the charisma and charm of Lawless and the smarts of The Hunger Games‘ Katniss as producers are said to be looking for a sophisticated and smart superhero for a new generation,” THR wrote.
It is currently unclear what role, if any, Lucy Lawless will play in the production but lawless has told HitFix at comic-con that –”they’ve got to bring [Xena] back.”
“I’ve been pitching that show … because … there’s a swell of interest still,” she said. “I’m always being peppered with questions [about] when the Xena movie is coming. Guys, I’m pitching my ass off to make it happen, whether it’s with me or not. I think it’d be funny to have a reboot like Ash vs. Evil Dead — like middle-aged Xena in a muumuu with a bad attitude and a smoking habit. … Bring [actor] Ted Raimi [who played Joxer] in … [and maybe] Bruce Campbell.” According to the Hollywood reporter.

Whatever happens with the new franchise it is likely that if they sculpt the new Xena even roughly on the original than the iconic heroine will cultivate whole new generation of salivating pubescent boys.
