A stunning blend of African, Brazilian, Caucasian and West Indian heritage, Jasmine Tookes is one of the models of the moment. Her flawless skin and full lips make her the dream of close-ups, while her slender figure makes her the perfect runway model, and everyone is taking notice.
Tookes was born in Huntington Beach, California in 1991. Growing up, she was very athletic, playing volleyball, softball and doing gymnastics. As a celebrity stylist, Tookes’ mother inspired in her a love of fashion and a dream to walk the runways of high fashion designers. She was discovered at 15 years old while accompanying her mother to a photoshoot with Abercrombie and Fitch, shot by Bruce Weber. In 2009 Tookes signed with IMG Models, making her runway debut for Lauren Conrad and Tulle & Cloth Logic’s Spring/Summer 2009 shows.
In 2010 she became the face of both Ugg and Guess, and in 2011 Tookes was a runner up in the Sports Illustrated 2011 Model Search. By 2013 Tookes had worked with Steven Meisel and Lachlan Bailey for American Vogue, Ellen von Unwerth for Italian Vogue, and Giampaolo for French Vogue, as well as other notable photographers like Emma Summerton, Sabastian Kim, Sharif Hamza, and Thierry Le Goues.
Despite already achieving these campaigns, Tookes credits her big break to when she met Oprah Winfrey while walking for Ralph Lauren in 2011. Winfrey highlighted Tookes’ skin in a very unique way, exclaiming over Tookes’ “buttery soft skin,” and asking her to rub her skin against Winfrey’s face! After that, Tookes’ career took off.
According to Vogue Italia the expectation for models of colour is normally 2 to 3 years, but Tookes is bucking every trend. Working with brands like Prada, Chanel, Burberry, Tom Ford and Versace, she seems only to rise form height to height.
Models are known for their dedication to maintaining a healthy body, for healthy eating and intense workouts designed to maintain that perfect figure. Tookes is at the top of model athletes, and is one of the most consulted on fitness and beauty routines. In the beginning of her career, she actually had to monitor her workouts, making sure she wasn’t too fit to model!
Tookes’ athleticism has done wonders for her career, leading to her enormous strength in runway walking. In six years of modelling she has walked for over eighteen designers, including Calvin Klein, Prada, Miu Miu, Versace and Tory Burch.
After gaining such runway success, it was little wonder when Tookes was appointed one of eleven new models to walking in the 2012 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Tookes continued to walk in the show in 2013 and 2014, and in 2014 she reached one of the pinnacles for models by becoming the face of their “Scandalous” fragrance. Tookes was appointed as an official Victoria’s Secret Angel in 2015.
Not satisfied with being one of the world’s top models, Tookes has also tried out the acting world when she appeared in an episode of CBS program Hawaii Five-0 with fellow models and Victoria’s Secret Angels Behati Prinsloo and Jacquelyn Jablonski.
Tookes has been lucky in that her personal life and career effortlessly intertwine. Model boyfriend Tobias Sorensen and Tookes are often talked about together, as both make such a powerful impact on the modelling industry, but until recently their careers stood alone. This changed when the dynamite couple was given the opportunity to be the combined face of Calvin Klein‘s “Eternity Now” fragrance campaign.
2015 has been another big year for Tookes, appearing in editorials for J Crew and H&M. She has become a favourite of Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, appearing in Marc Jacobs campaigns in 2012 and 2013 and walking for the designer in 2014 and 2015.
