Racist social media users target Ugandan model, Aamito Lagum, after a photo of her full lips was posted on MAC Cosmetics’ Instagram during the New York Fashion Week.
After the backstage photo of the model wearing one of MAC’s lipsticks was posted on the brand’s social media, the MAC Cosmetics Instagram page was bombarded with racial comments and offensive messages.
The photo features the model’s beautiful dark skin and full lips, wearing MAC’s ‘Matte Royal’ lipstick during Fashion Week. Unfortunately the messages of praise and support were overshadowed by a bombardment an onslaught undoubtedly racist and derogatory statements towards black women.
Lagum had previously been recognised for winning ‘Africa’s Next Top Model’ and landing a modeling contract from DNA Model Management. Lagum was also one of the hundreds of models that wore Kanye West’s Collection, in his Madison Square Exhibition, and was regarded for her appearance in the New York Fashion Week.
Lagum’s lips became the target for vicious comments and a racist slew of messages, to which a spokesperson for MAC replied:
“MAC stands for and respects all ages, all races, all sexes. We celebrate the beauty of individuality, and the confidence to be who you are.”
A campaign was launched to combat this backlash and negativity. Instagram user @fiyawata, started the hashtag #PrettyLipsPeriod to show support for Aamito and all the women around the world facing the same discriminatory beauty standards.
The model responded by posting her own response to these Internet trolls. She wrote, “My lips giving you sleepless nights. On @maccosmetics IG” and thanked the brand and her make-up artist.
MAC had to delete all racist comments, after it was brought to their attention. However, the hashtag is still quickly spreading on Facebook and Twitter, calling for a ‘Black Excellence’ movement.
