Josh Goot’s Big Move to New York

Australian designer Josh Goot has made the decision to relocate his eponymous label from Sydney to New York.

It’s something I thought about for many years… And it was hard because we love Australia. It’s a big part of our identity, and Australian customers are very dear to us.

It has been over a decade since Goot launched himself into the world of fashion. His debut collection for the Australian Fashion Week earned him the Tiffany & Co. Young Designer of the Year Award in 2005. The recognition led him to receive positive comments on his clean aesthetics and impressive concept in his collection. His succes also resulted in a successful debut at New York Fashion Week where he was highly praised by the critics. Harper’s BAZAAR even described Goot as modernism’s new messiah. He has successfully established his brand in Australia and continues to support David Jones, The Iconic, and other prominent boutiques all the while climbing the ladder in the international arena.

Josh Goot- Spring Summer 2005I always felt that the label and our outlook had global relevance, so I suppose I’ve felt that since the beginning.

His business took a rough turn and had to go into voluntary administration over a year ago. Goot’s label underwent significant changes, from closing two of his stores to working with a much smaller team. Following all the turmoil, his knitwear, sewing and cutting production was relocated to Italy. This move enabled him to open his label to global platform as the access from Europe to New York is much more direct than from Australia.

For a man with over a decade of experience in fashion, this relocation will certainly create an array of new possibilities, especially with the Northern Hemisphere’s seasons. It is crucial timing he takes the next step in his career to grow and creates pathways for his label to gain prominence and publicity that its rightly deserves. Though he is leaving Australia, Goot said his fashion label will not give up on his dedicated Australian customers. His devised long-term plans for New York will include his roots and intends on encouraging Australia to be a part of his new journey.

In many ways, we’re back at square one but with ten years’ experience and a few more pastas under our belt….Sometimes I look back and think of what I could have or should have done over the years, but I was young and ambitious, and it’s been a big learning experience. But it’s really exciting.
