Fourteen years have passed since the acclaimed TV series Xena: Warrior Princess came to an end. Now however, at long last, the series which captured the hearts of so many is set for a revival.
Rumors of a remake had been floating around for a while, with Lucy Lawless the actress who portrayed Xena denying allegations of a reboot and then taking it back stating she would be interested in taking part in a remake, whether in front or behind the camera. NBC confirmed the remake was a go in August 2015 and Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will reprise their roles as executive producers.
That just leaves what new ground the remake is destined to cover. How will the Xena: Warrior Princess of 2016 be different from the original?
First and foremost, the issue that has had fans clamouring is the confirmation that Xena’s relationship with Gabrielle will be romantically explicit.
Back in the 90s, censoring was far more conservative than it is now so the studio had to opt for subtle hinting rather than outright romance. Writer for the fresh take Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who has worked on Lost and Helix, has promised that the relationship will be there for all to see.
There were rumors that Lawless would reprise the role of Xena yet she was sceptical.
The project is still in its early days so a time for release is not quite on the cards yet.
