Star of Poldark and The Hobbit Trilogy, renowned actor Aidan Turner has turned down the opportunity to portray the next Doctor Who, much to the disappointment of his fans.
Turner has played a vampire, a returned soldier, a dwarf and was even considered to be the next James Bond. With such an impressive list of achievements behind him, it can be easily assumed that the role of the 13th incarnation of the doctor would be a sure fit. It came as a surprise when Turner refused the role because he believes his Being Human co-star and friend Russell Tovey would be a far better choice to play the mysterious time lord.
Turner attended the MCM comic-con in London where he attended a Being Human reunion alongside Tovey and fellow co-star Lenora Crichlow. He stated.
“He’d do a very good job, wouldn’t he? Yeah, I’d be all for that. I’d sign that petition. He’d smash it – he’d kill it!”
Agreeing with Turner’s claim Crichlow added.
“They’d be very lucky to have him. You’d be MY Doctor.”
Whether Tovey himself is so keen is debatable having responded with a vague;
“So there you go.”
Perhaps it can be argued that Turner has no interest in the role, at the moment anyway. Time is good at changing minds. Still both Turner and, indirectly, Tovey are members of a long list of potential Doctor Who contenders. Whoever it is that takes up the mantle will have some big shoes to fill, joining the ranks of all the other Doctor’s including Peter Capaldi, Matt Smith and David Tennant.
