As what might go down as one of the greatest April fools pranks in history, Adult Swim dropped the season 3 premiere in spectacular ‘Rick and Morty’ fashion and it didn’t disappoint. Announced on Twitter, Adult Swim live streamed the first episode on a loop for several hours before ending at midnight. In concurrence with the stream, the episode was also played repeatedly on Cartoon Network, cancelling all other shows for the night including the newly rebooted Samurai Jack episode which left some fans mildly irked. However, the surprise airing of one of Adult Swims most popular shows will surely make up for this indiscretion.

Rick and Morty has wooed fans with its smartly written dialogue and intricate stories that are seemingly easy to understand, even though it is grounded in unfamiliar galaxies and outlandish settings. The season two finale aired way back in October, 2015 which ended the season on a cliffhanger and made the wait just a little more unbearable. The final moments saw Rick imprisoned for his crimes and Earth’s society integrating with the alien’s Galactic Federation, leaving viewers wanting more in what would be one of the longest gaps between television seasons.

The season three premiere, ‘The Rickshank Redemption’, picks up several months after the last episode with the Smith family in shambles following Rick’s departure. Rick and Morty have gone on some pretty wacky adventures often leaving destruction in their wake and lasting consequences that haven’t been readdressed, until now. The premiere provides some hilarious closure to their previous adventures as the series looks to the future. Skipping through some body snatching and a running gag of a McDonalds Disney promotion from the 90’s, this episode acts as a soft reboot for the series that foreshadows many more zany adventures to come. Unfortunately, there will be a short wait as the next episode won’t be expected to air until sometime in June this year.
