The Get Down‘s cancellation seems to fall in place with Baz Luhrmann’s inability to commit to a second season.
Luhrmann’s musical drama that is centred around the 1970s South Bronx’s hip-hop and disco scene, has been axed by Netflix after its less than impressive reciprocation by audiences.
The first-half of the first season was released by Netflix in August, 2016 with the second-half following in April, 2017. The Get Down was Luhrmann’s first television project, but due to other film commitments, he has stated that he no longer has the time to dedicate to the project.
In an official statement, posted to his Facebook page, Luhrmann explained that “When I was asked to come to the centre of The Get Down to help realise it, I had to defer a film directing commitment for at least two years. This exclusivity has understandably become a sticking point for Netflix and Sony, who have been tremendous partners and supporters of the show.”
He went on to say that “It kills me that I can’t split myself into two and make myself available to both productions.”
