If you haven’t heard of The Met Gala, get out from that rock you’re living under. After this year’s tribute to Comme des Garçons, the world famous annual fundraising gala has reportedly released the theme for next years ball and it’s one of their most controversial yet.
What comes to your mind when you combine “Fashion and Religion”? Well you better get thinking in time for next years Met Gala because that’s the focus for the ball according to multiple sources from the Met’s Costume Institute.
Religion is always a topic that flies high on the radar and this theme is proving to be one of the most controversial themes yet. While some might question the theme itself, it’s not the first time it will have appeared on the red carpet. Many European fashion big timers have played with the idea of religion in some of their collections, some including Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano and Riccardo Tisci. Think the 17th-century Baroque art and the religious iconography of crosses, elaborate headpieces and detailing and Madonnas.
But this also has loads of potential to go wrong, like can you imagine someone rocking up in an Adam and Eve inspired costume?!?! Major cringe already.
Here’s hoping that patron high priestess of the Met Gala, Rihanna, comes dressed to slay again in 2018. Brush up on your biblical knowledge and let us know what you want to see next year!
