After seemingly forever the sparkling and glorious stage presence of Elton John is leaving the spotlight, but he’s not going quietly or without his signature style. The five-times Grammy Winner, Oscar Winner, and voice of multiple generations has announced that his retirement from the stage will come after one final tour that will span three years. Beginning in the United States on September 8th and travelling across five continents, the ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ Tour promises to be a spectacle that even unidentified life forms on Mars will be in awe of. Helped no doubt  by Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, who has been brought on as costume designer.

Gucci have been very busy dropping projects lately: there’s the all-illustrated SS18 campaign ‘Utopian Fantasy’ by Spanish illustrator Ignasi Monreal, a new collection celebrating the Year of the Dog, and the much-anticipated opening of the Gucci Garden. Now we will have a rhinestone-paved yellow brick road to look forward to.

It’s perfect that long-time Elton fan Michele should be designing the performer’s final lavish costumes. There is an obvious connection between the two as we can see from the SS18 show where there were a number of not-so-subtle references to the singer and his reputation for flamboyant, attention-grabbing attire. We saw bedazzled denim jackets, sparkling swimming caps, large sunglasses, and even a tote bag with the cover of “Levon/Goodbye” on the front.

When Elton John made the announcement he gave us a taste of things to come by wearing a floral tailcoat studded with crystals and pearls – but of course – and the words “Gucci Loves Elton” on the back. Knowing Michele’s penchant for the eye-catching and dramatic we can expect a veritable explosion of sequins, jewels, jumpsuits, sunglasses, feathers, and headpieces. No doubt this tour will be one of the most highly anticipated music slash fashion events of the year, but for now all we can do is wait and dream of the glittering spectacle to come.
