Move-over Laneway, theres a new one day-er in town. For a one day musical masterclass, I present to you – Sydney City Limits!
The inaugural Sydney City Limits festival is set to blow on the 24th of February at Centennial Park. In a lineup stacked with international favourites such as Justice, Beck, Future, Phoenix and Tash Sultana, there is HUGE potential within the lineup, but who else should you see?
I’ve hand selected a few musical gems that I’m confident will blow your mind…
Thundercat
We’ve all heard of Kendrick Lamar, but who the hell is Thundercat? Thundercat, ladies and gentleman, IS Kendrick Lamar. Well, not actually… He’s just the genius behind Kung-fu Kenny’s hit albums ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ and ‘DAMN.’.
The LA born multi-genre bass guitarist, record producer, singer and songwriter (gee, that sure was a mouthful), was put on the map after the release of his 2017 album ‘Drunk’. Layers on layers of funk laced with spacey synth populate his sound, and if you like Kendrick’s backing tracks then you’ll absolutely adore Thundercat.
Ocean Alley
Floating somewhere (get it?) between Tash Sultana and Sticky Fingers is a little Sydney five piece called Ocean Alley. These boys have been making waves (zing) since the release of their debut album ‘Lost Tropics’. With a wailing alternative rock feel, sing-along potential and a powerful stage presence, they are going to kill it in their home town.
Unfortunately their set clashes with rap giant Future, and the American rapper is one of the biggest names in the lineup. Anyway, if you’re up for a gamble and wanna support arguably the best local act on the bill, go see Ocean Alley. As if you needed any further persuasion to lend an ear to the local heroes, here’s their latest single ‘Confidence’:
Stella Donnelly
Okay, I gotta be honest… I’m an absolute sucker for Aussie female vocals and slow guitar, and Stella Donnelly definitely hits the spot. It’s a different feel compared to the other two mentioned must-see’s, but this Perth-based solo artist will have your face drenched and fezzy-glitter all askew, if you dare.
Stella Donnelly is one of the hottest young Aussie acts out at the moment, and it’d be silly not to see her in a festival atmosphere. She also just announced a tour with fellow Australian artist, Alex the Astronaut.
Listen to her hauntingly beautiful track ‘Mechanical Bull’ below:
Will I be seeing you at Sydney City Limits? Let me know which artists you plan on catching in the comments below.
Very cool Josh
