For over 20 years American designer Rick Owen has been leaving his mark on the fashion world with his unique style.
Now he has opened and curated his first exhibition at the Triennale di Milano, Italy. Entitled “Subhuman Inhuman Superhuman”, the show is a retrospective chronicling his life’s work. Speaking with Vogue, Owens describes the retrospective as a personal narrative and calls the exhibition a major thing.
“There’s a side of me which goes; It’s just another show, I’ve done four shows a year for a long time, it doesn’t make a huge difference. But when I’ll be on my deathbed, I’ll look back, and this will be a very significant moment, a defining moment of my life. It defines me; it summarises who I am and what I express, and what I did and what I left behind.”
The display is a mix selection of more than 100 garments, objects, accessories, furniture and runway videos connected through a spectacular site-specific installation created by the designer.
The sculptural installation is mounted on the ceiling and is made up of concrete lily blossoms. Other artworks include sand of the Adriatic Sea of Italy, the hair of Rick Owens and pieces made in collaboration with artists Alessandro Manzoni, Pierre Molinier, Marcel Duchamp and more.
“I’m not going to get too abstract. I like history, and I like being able to rewrite history, and that’s what something like this allows you to do. You’re able to quietly sweep away all your mistakes, just celebrate all the things that you consider successful and just paint yourself in a whole pretty picture. So I’m very hands-on.” Owens said in an interview with WWD.
The exhibition is currently open until March 25, 2018, at Triennale in Milan.
I love Rick Owen and his muse Michele Lamy
