Back on home turf and hot on the heels of their set at Download Festival last weekend, Christian Anthony, one third of Chase Atlantic, found the time to sit back with us and reflect on the bands undefinable style of music, their mutual love of Skrillex, and the boys’ respective funeral songs…
Firstly, tell me a bit about the band. How do you all know each other?
Chase Atlantic is a band from Australia that makes a hybrid of rock/alternative infused with hip-hop and urban elements. Clinton and Mitchel are brothers, and they met me in Sydney in 2012. We bonded over our mutual love of Skrillex.
Have you always wanted to be musicians? If not, what else did you have planned?
From a young age we always wanted to make music, I guess. If we weren’t making music, Clinton would be a swimmer, Mitchel a farmer, and I’d probably be playing cricket.
What music have you guys been listening to lately?
Lots of hip-hop as we spend so much time in America. Artist like Travis Scott, Drake, Migos. But we also listen to classic Australian bands like The Last Dinosaurs, Sticky Fingers, and Tame Impala.
I’ve heard that a couple of you were on X-Factor, tell me about that experience.
X-Factor was a cool experience. But honestly it taught us what the music industry shouldn’t be like, and we realised that there is a difference between singing on a show, and being an artist.
The official video for ‘Swim’ has just dropped. Along with your name, it’s another reference to water,
is there a reason for this?
I guess being from Australia we subconsciously always think about the beach, ‘cause that’s where we
grew up.
In the film clip for ‘Swim’ there is a Korean translation, do you have a large Korean fan base?
I don’t know if we have much of a Korean fan base but it is definitely a place we would love to visit and
play shows. The musical production in bands like BTS and Girls Generation is something we are
fascinated by.
Who is your dream artist to head out on tour with?
The Weeknd. Seems so cool to the people he brings out with him.
I know it’s a bit grim, but what are each of your funeral songs?
Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley – Christian
Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) by Green Day – Clinton
Staying Alive by The Bee-Gees – Mitchel
What do you think is the best moment of your music career so far?
I think our first album has been the biggest achievement so far.
Name a couple of artists that sound similar to you.
No one.
You’ve been described as ‘alternative/indie’, do you agree with this or do you feel your music subscribes to another genre?
I feel like our music goes through all sorts of genres so you can call it whatever you like. Genres are
dying anyway.
What movie would you want your music to be the soundtrack for?
Anything by Quentin Tarantino.
Name one artist that undoubtedly influences your sound.
The Weeknd.
What is your favourite country to tour?
America.
What do you think is the best song you’ve produced?
‘Swim’ or any of the new unreleased stuff.
What is the weirdest thing that’s happened at one of your shows?
I don’t know, maybe pulling out the power of the entire venue before our set started.
Name something you’re excited for in 2018!
Our first European tour!
