Something good finally came out of our nation’s capital – R&B artist Turquoise Prince. The electric singer from Canberra has released a fire new single “Lighter” ahead of a national tour with hip-hop duo Spit Syndicate this month.
Since his debut single “Worlds Apart“ in 2016, Turquoise Prince has been no stranger to topping national Spotify viral charts, or to featuring on Triple J – the on-air haven for local artists. Like his previous singles, including “Sunday Sesh,” “Lighter” is a stellar fusion of soul, pop and R&B that tells an achingly beautiful story of unrequited love.
From the first listen, one particular lyric etched into my brain: “Put your lighter to my mind and burn some sense into it”. Sensual, deep and irresistibly smooth, the mellow dance track explodes with lyrics like this. A catchy chorus and the comforting scratch of a vinyl record, coupled with a rhythmic synth beat, makes for something refreshingly unique in the R&B genre. With a winning combination of explosive live performances, magnetic energy and undeniable soul, a revival for Aussie R&B is on the horizon with this polished, raw talent.
Speaking about the new single, the Freddie-Mercury-obsessed singer explains (from Warner Music Australia):
“It’s about staring into the eyes of temptation. Everybody’s been there – whether you’re tempted to smash a late night Uber eats, or in this case fall in love with a girl that has a boyfriend. I love the song because it takes me there every time,”
