Global sensation Billie Eilish has just released her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?. At just 17, it seems as if she’s revolutionised popular music entirely.
LA-born singer, Billie Eilish made herself known at the ripe age of 14 with her single Ocean Eyes which soared to number 25 in the Spotify charts. Her haunting and angelic voice made waves globally and Eilish was setting herself up to be a monumental figure in music.
Her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, which was released on March 29th, features 14 songs; each vastly different to the one before. In an interview with iTunes for her album’s release, Eilish discusses how her own problems with sleep disorders inspired the album, “I’ve always had really bad night terrors and sleep paralysis,” and describes how the album is an insight into the subconscious.
Produced and co-written by her older brother Finneas O’Connell, the album has no distinct sound but instead takes the listener through a chilling journey of Eilish’s subconscious. With songs like When the Party’s Over, and Wish You Were Gay, Eilish deals with the troubles in relationships with undertones of melancholy. The record also features some of Eilish’s odd humour as she incorporates snippets of her favourite comedy show The Office in her track My Strange Addiction.
Her unique sound of the album is attributed to her talents in music writing. In her interview with iTunes, she discusses how she likes to take on a persona of a character when writing a song and that not every song is based on herself. There is also a real sense of melancholy throughout the album, “Depression has sort of controlled everything in my life,” she stated during her interview, and this is present in many of the songs.
Eilish’s album is a whirlwind of different genres thrown into one masterpiece. Her songs range from pop, hip hop and alternative but all stay true to her honest and dark lyrics.
Eilish’s album is as surprising as her. At just 17 she flaunts more self-confidence than most adults, wearing and doing things out of the norm with her “I don’t give a damn attitude”. Her career could have gone down the young pop star route, but she changed course and instead exhibits a darker and more eerie persona. Eilish is famous for posting controversial and somewhat creepy clips such as the music video for Bury A Friend where she seems to be possessed and is then stabbed in her back by a dozen needles, all representing a nightmare.
Eilish has only just scratched the surface of her career but has already cemented herself as a revolutionary artist. With her debut album said to reach the top of the charts, Eilish has allowed fans an insight into the corners of her mind. Eilish’s album is unique, chilling and experimental but her haunting voice is the hero, still captivating the world as she did at 15.
