Game of Thrones Fans: hop on your dragon and get excited, as a House of Targaryen prequel is in the works at HBO.
Deadline reported that George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood novel will be adapted by HBO. Fire and Blood is a prequel to Game of Thrones, telling the story of the Dragons of Westeros and tracks the beginning and end of the Targaryens House, 300 years before Game of Thrones.
This prequel will be one the first of many Game of Thrones Spin Offs that are currently in the works. In 2017, it was reported that there were five Game of Thrones Prequel scripts in development and this appears to be one of them.
George R.R. Martin has been teasing the upcoming series on his blog for a while now.
“We have had five different Game of Thrones successor shows in development at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely,” he wrote in May.
“Two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer,” he added. “What are they about? I cannot say. But maybe some of you should pick up a copy of Fire & Blood and come up with your own theories,” Martin Continued.
This news comes days after Game of Thrones picked up a whopping 32 Emmy Nominations for the final season. The 32 nominations broke the record for the most nominations in a single year. Along with the critical acclaim, the show also garnered an audience of 45 million viewers for its final episodes.
This project will also be the first without executive producers, David Benioff and DB Weiss, with the pair joining Netflix. Ryan Condal is set to executive produce, alongside George R.R. Martin. Condal is experienced in the TV world, as he was the show runner and producer of Colony, which aired for three seasons. Condal has a good relationship with Martin, and will be eager to get this prequel off the ground.
