Stop what you’re doing! A Rom-Com Based on Antoni Porowski’s Sexually Fluid Love Life Is coming to Netflix

Netflix is producing a new romantic comedy inspired by the romantic life of Queer Eye‘s Antoni Porowski, and it’s all I want to talk about.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that the upcoming film will be titled “Girls & Boys” and will be loosely based on Porowski’s experiences in the dating world as a sexually fluid man. There is no news yet on whether or not Porowski will play himself. But if not, there’s always a chance he’ll cameo in it.

The Movement Advancement Project (MAP) released a report titled “Invisible Majority”. This report explores the experiences of people who identify as bisexual, who make up more than half of the LGBT community.

The report illustrates that bisexual people experience alarming rates of invisibility, societal rejection and poor physical and mental health—often at rates higher than their lesbian and gay peers.

As a bisexual Male, myself I can easily say I have felt and experienced these emotions. Not really seeing people like me represented in media, in an adequate way. Although in recent years’ visibility in movies and television of the Bisexual and Sexually Fluid community has increased, there is still more to be done.

Antoni is known on Queer eye as the food and wine expert on the show, so we’re excited to see what Netflix and he are cooking up for this upcoming romantic comedy. Titled Girls & Boys, the film will tap into Porowski’s dating experiences. Black-ish creator Kenya Barris will develop the story for Netflix and Hulu Plus One filmmakers Andrew Rhymer and Jeff Chan are set to write it.

Last year, Porowski gave an interview to GQ magazine in which he expressed discomfort with the label of “gay”.

“I feel like if I do refer to myself as gay, which would make it easier for people to understand sometimes, I feel like it dishonours women that I’ve been in love with, I’ve been with more women than men. I sort of never really had a traditional coming out… I dated a man and then I dated women for several years and then I was in a relationship with a man,” he said.

I have felt this in the past and I can make connections with what Antoni is saying. And I’m not alone, most bisexuals both male and female all go through this at some point or another. It took me a while to understand what being bisexual was and how it was part of me. It would have been good to have felt represented in media, to feel normal and not different. But like anything it takes time and in recent years we are seeing more diversity on our screens.

Although the film is still in very early stages, all we really know is that it will be loosely based on Porowski’s dating life as a sexually fluid man. But I am excited to see where Netflix goes with this, will there be more bisexual exposure, is this the beginning of more representation for LGBTIQ+ people.

So while we wait for more information, we can just stalk Antoni’s Instagram and see what he’s up to.
