The Iraqi-Syrian artist who boasts an RIAA-Certified Gold status has released her EP Good Things which includes 6 ambient and emotive songs that explore the breakups, lost friendships, and moments of cathartic liberation that Wafia has experienced in her life. Wafia’s EP is a personal ode to herself and the experiences in her life that have helped her discover who she is today and have shaped her life for the better. The EP was released following the singles ‘Flowers & Superpowers’, ‘Pick Me’, and ‘Hurricane’ which all appear on the tracklist. Good Things is Wafia’s first EP since her 2018 VIII album.
About the new EP Wafia said; “I shed a lot of heaviness in the last year, friendships and relationships that didn’t serve me any longer. I grieved a lot and some days I still do but anything difficult comes with an opportunity for something better. This EP is about that.”
‘Hurricane’ is the first track on the EP exploring the fear of losing the connections between friendships. This track is reflective with an upbeat electronica tune that brings a fresh burst of life to the EP. With strumming guitars, a strong baseline, and harmonious vocals Wafia begins her EP on a high. Wafia also released a homemade music video for her title track which includes personal videos from the singer’s time in isolation.
About the song Wafia said; “I realised I had so many incredible people around me of my own that were there and they were constants. This song, to me, is about my friendship with them.”
‘Pick Me’ is about having self-love in a tumultuous relationship by always putting yourself first. The pop song features dancing electronic notes, bouncing beats, ambient tunes, and stunning vocals. The song is full of feminine empowerment with Wafia fiercely stating the message that you must always back yourself.
In a statement Wafia has said the song is about self-empowerment and self-love; “I wrote this song… after coming out of a bad relationship last year,” she said.
“The break-up period dragged out way more than it needed to, but in all of our angry calls and texts I came to see how much he resented me and my career.”
“Love shouldn’t make you pick like that.”
‘Good Things’ is vibrant, fun, electro-charged and energetic with strong positive energy that highlights the strong theme of self-discovery present throughout Wafia’s EP. This track is all about focusing on the good things in life following times of grief such as heartbreak.
“Cause there’s nothing like an enemy to bring that good shit out of me boostin’ up that energy to remind that I got good things going.” Wafia immerses the listener in her positive energy by reminding us that life’s darker moments can help us see the good in our lives.
‘How To Lose A Friend’ concludes the EP on an emotive and slow note with soft melodies and soulful vocals. The song explores the breakdown of a friendship and the heartbreak that comes with losing someone close to you. “How do you go from talking every day, to will we ever speak again?”.
The song emphasises the purpose of the EP being a modern-day breakup album that is intensely personal and reflective of Wafia’s life. With stunning strings, piano, and gentle beats, this song is the most emotive and cathartic of all the songs on the EP.
Wafia’s new EP Good Things is a raw, thoughtful and deeply personal account of the breakups, lost friendships, and adversity in Wafia’s life which she has learnt to overcome with a fresh perspective on life’s duller moments. As an album of self-discovery Wafia learns throughout each song how to handle loss, grief, and pain and turn it into something positive with a personal message. Exploring elements of pop, jazz-funk, electronica and soul, this explorative album features some of Wafia’s finest music that echoes a personal yet very relatable message for all listeners.
