The seminal electronic duo Daft Punk have met an explosive end. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter had been making music together since 1993. But as of this week, the pair have officially announced their split. Selected from 2006, avant-garde film entitled ‘Electroma’, a provocative and simple message punctuates the duo’s farewell to fans, “1993 – 2021”.

Longtime publicist Kathryn Frazier confirmed the news to Pitchfork. No reason was given for the breakup.

Taking the name Daft Punk from a critic’s dismissal of a live performance in 1993, the enigmatic duo reached new heights of fame in 1995. A single entitled “Da Funk” received worldwide acclaim, and was accompanied by a Spike-Jonze music video.

Bangalter and Homem-Christo attended school together in Paris. They spent many years curating and perfecting their sound; a world of music born from within the underground Parisian rave scene. Their unique vocoder style distinguished the pair and earned Grammy nominations for popular track “Around The World” in 1997 and a Grammy win in 2007 for “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (Alive 2007)”.

At this stage, it is unclear whether or not the platinum-selling artists will be taking on any future projects.
