There is a buzz in the air surrounding the classic horror Candyman.

Written and directed by Bryn Hammond, The Complete History of Candyman includes both new and archival interviews. The film explores the origins of the cult classic, which is loosely based on Clive Barker’s The Forbidden.

According to the press release,

“The documentary will place Candyman within the context of the horror landscape that it emerged from, drawing links to former classics of the slasher sub-genre. It will also examine how Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing – a film “inextricably linked” to Candyman – “became the model for how the studio system packaged contemporary racial issues in a manner that startlingly respects the ability of viewers to think for themselves”.

Ties with the African-American Experience

The documentary unravels into an analysis of the symbiotic relationship between horror and the African-American experience. The popularisation and subsequent decline of the slasher-sub genre is explored, also a Hollywood studio system which packaged contemporary racial issues in a particular way. It includes references to Nia Dacosta’s much-anticipated 2021 sequel of the much-loved original.

Spiritual Sequel

The film was released when DaCosta was 2 years old. Eventually, it left a great impact on her.

Written by Jordan Peele, DaCosta is directing a Candyman reboot which graces audiences in 2021. Multiple coronavirus-related delays held up the film’s release since 2018. The film is set to be released on August 26. Twenty seven years after Bernard Rose’s original and set in the now gentrified neighbourhood of the first film, Chicago, MGM and Universal have described the film as a “spiritual sequel”.

“As a kid she would play the game — saying his name in the mirror five times. So when she was asked to pitch herself as director to Jordan Peele’s Monkey Paw Productions for its upcoming “spiritual sequel,” DaCosta was more than ready.”
