New York Fashion Week AW21: FIB’s Verdict

For the second time amid the pandemic, a mostly virtual fashion show replaced the lively runways of NY’s fall fashion event.

A much quieter fashion fanfare than usual. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there were fewer large-scale productions this year. As it was in Spring, many American fashion designers debuted their Fall collections via livestreams, lookbooks, presentations and other digital means.

Jason Wu

Jason Wu was one of only a few designers to put on a live show this year. It bore a resemblance to Andy Warhol’s pop art and encompassed overtones of grocery store romance. The show had an audience limit of 25 for anyone lucky enough to receive an invitation.

Tory Burch

“Everything is meant to be layered and worn again and again,” Burch explains of her fall 2021 collection.

Presented via a Lookbook, the collection was inspired by memories.

Coach

Coach Forever Season Two premiered on 24 February 2021. It is a sequel to the Spring 2021 collection, full of beautiful surprises.

Executive creative director at Coach, Stuart Vevers told Harper’s Bazaar,

“I have always loved exploring the intersection of fashion and pop culture at Coach…

“I am excited to bring my latest vision for the house to life via Coach TV. I wanted both the collection and the presentation to make sense and resonate in these unique times, and I am excited to share both in a way that I hope will entertain and inspire.”

Oscar De La Renta

Ribbed knits, drawstrings and more relaxed, roomy attire was the popular choice for Fall collections during the pandemic. Oscar de la Renta’s Fernando Garcia and Lauren Kim took an opposing viewpoint however.

“Not everything can be sweatpants. I’m sorry… I need people to dream. How boring would it be if all we see is sweatpants from now till the pandemic is over?”

Inspiring a desire to dress up, the collection is full of crystals, motifs and floral applique.

Rebecca Minkoff

Rebecca treated her fall show guests to an in-person experience this year. The show took place in a Soho apartment and had a guest list of 100. Thousands more watched on Instagram and TikTok.

Here’s an inside look at the model prep for the fall performance and a sneak peek into the actual show itself.

Tom Ford

Tom Ford’s collection is fierce powerful and wonderful, he explained in the show notes for his fall 2021 collection.

“I mean, who doesn’t want to be badass? Especially after being trapped at home for a year.”

Danielle Frankel

Both earthy and inky silhouettes dominated Frankel’s collection this fall, in her first ever ready-to-wear bridal collection. Resembling the colours and textures of dried flowers, it’s pastel-toned; perhaps not in the way you’d expect.

Zimmermann

A 70s fantasy made its way into reality for Zimmermann’s fall collection. Silky blouses, soft petal cut outs and circular patterns created nostalgic silhouettes bases on an era-defining music program she’d watched as a child.
