Taking place on the 23rd of May, the Billboard Music Awards celebrated artist’s achievements in the musical field.

Dissimilar to most award ceremonies, the Billboard Music Awards determines nominees and winners through how well they perform in the market. Website and publication Billboard utilizes data they have tracked over a certain period of time. Instead of votes, factors such as social engagement, streaming, as well as album and digital song sales are considered.  Top Social Artist and Top Collaboration are exceptions to this, both of which are fan voted categories.  Annually held since 1990, excluding the years between 2007 to 2010, the ceremony recognizes top performing musicians in a variety of genres.

This year, a number of winners achieved multiple awards in various categories. The Weeknd received the most accolades winning ten of the sixteen categories he was nominated in. These include Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top R&B Artist and Top R&B Album. Meanwhile Taylor Swift won Top Female Artist and Top Billboard 200 Artis’. In addition, K-Pop group BTS were awarded Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Social Artist and Top Selling Song.

The music video for the song now holds the record for Most Viewers for the Premier of a Video on YouTub’. The video succeeded another one of BTS’s video’s ‘Dynamite’ to claim the title. Additionally, ‘Butter’ was also the Most Viewed YouTube Music Video in 24 Hours by a K-Pop Group.

Other performers for the night include The Weeknd, Glass Animals, Alica Keys and P!nk. Henry Golding introduced The Weeknd for the artist’s performance of ‘Save Your Tears’. Additionally, Glass Animals took to the stage to perform one of their songs ‘Heat Waves’. Alicia Keys and P!nk meanwhile performed separate medleys.

In addition to her time on stage as a performer, P!nk also won the ceremony’s Icon Award.
