The Nominations for the 2021 Emmy Awards have been announced!
The official nominees for the Emmys have been announced! Popular show nominees include The Queen’s Gambit, Wandavision, The Mandalorian, Hamilton, and The Handmaid’s Tale. The Mandalorian and The Crown appeared to be crowd favourites, however, both receiving 24 nominations. HBO received a total of 130 nominations for their shows, going up against runner-up Netflix for the awards.
Snubs and Surprises
The nominations were not met without resistance, however. Australians were quick to notice how Nicole Kidman and Joel Edgerton were denied nominees for their respective roles in The Undoing and The Underground Railroad. Kidman’s co-star, Hugh Grant, was nominated for an award but spoke out publicly on the nominations. In a public statement, he said,
“I’m extremely grateful and honoured, but I should point out that I was basically carried all the way by my fellow actors – especially Nicole”
Sarah Paulson, who starred in Netflix’s Ratched, was also denied an Emmy nomination. This is in spite of her show reaching a record 48 million households in the first 4 weeks of its release. Star of The Mandalorian Pedro Pascal was also snubbed of a nomination, despite the show’s reigning popularity on Disney+.
The nominations weren’t without their surprises though. HBO’s Lovecraft Country received five nominations, despite its early cancellation following season 1’s release. MJ Rodriguez is also the first trans person to be nominated for a leading actress award, for her role in the period drama Pose.
The 73rd Emmy Awards will be presented live with an in-person ceremony in Los Angeles, California. It will be broadcast on the 20th of September, Australian time.
