A 24-hour live-streamed concert featuring the worlds biggest stars is set to commence on the 25th of September 2021.
Global Citizen presents another charity/relief concert following the success of their last concert One World: Together at Home. The Concert will tour the world from Central Park in New York to the Champ de Mars in Paris, as well as London, Los Angeles, Lagos, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro and Seoul.
Many global artists have been set to participate including The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, Christine and the Queens, Lizzo, Metallica, Burna Boy, Doja Cat, Usher, Femi Kuti, Green Day, Davido, Camila Cabello, DJ Snake, H.E.R., Shawn Mendes, BTS, Coldplay, Keith Urban, Andrea Bocelli, Duran Duran, Lang Lang, Demi Lovato, Ricky Martin and Alessia Cara.
The starry lineup is unlike anything we have ever seen before, bringing different genres and cultures together.
The concert will stream on a wide range of media platforms. ABC, ABC News Live, the BBC, FX, iHeartRadio, Hulu, YouTube, and Twitter are among those confirmed to broadcast the event.
Global Citizen’s Aim
Global Citizen has a unique but powerful way in which it conducts its concerts. Whereas other charity concerts would purely focus on raising money, Global Citizen does not ask for money but instead asks its viewers to enjoy the show.
Similarly to their previous concert, Global Citizen’s aim this year is not to raise funds but to encourage the wealthy population of the world to act on global issues. The concert points to businesses and philanthropists to donate resources to fight famine and restore one billion felled trees.
The event also aims to help secure a series of pledges from governments and companies. This includes the donation of a billion doses of the Covid vaccine, $6bnin famine relief and $400m for education. Other issues such as poverty and climate change are also on the agenda for awareness.
Hugh Evans, Global Citizen CEO, said, “We must rectify the damage done and hold world leaders and businesses accountable for ensuring that the entire world recovers from this pandemic together.”
International Support
The concert has garnered international support from many politicians and world leaders. The French president Emmanuel Macron, German chancellor Angela Merkel, Italian prime minister Mario Draghi and US Nancy Pelosi are some politicians supporting the event.
Geoffrey Onyeama, foreign minister of Nigeria said,
“Global Citizen Live brings us back down to earth by reminding the global community that charity should begin at home and we must preserve our earth and be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.”
Restrictions
We’re all tired of hearing the word “restriction”, however, the unpredictability of COVID-19 can halt this event. Last September was the original date for the Concert. Since the virus is active in some of the mentioned cities, we can only wonder how the event will run. The location of the first concert, Sydney Australia, for example, has recently been sent back into lockdown due to rising cases.
