Frank Ocean Launches New Luxury Brand: Homer

Frank Ocean’s new luxury brand, Homer, has officially launched. In his first interview in two years, the artist also teases a future Prada Collab.

For the past three and a half years, Frank Ocean has been hard at work on the development of his luxury fashion brand, Homer. The pieces are only available for purchase at the New York store, with walk-in appointments to observe jewellery only lasting for 15 minutes each. The store’s catalogue shows pieces ranging anywhere from $395 to $1.9 million.

The new luxury label is flouting the traditional rules of new businesses, opting for a bricks-and-mortar store in downtown Manhattan rather than a typical digital-only presence. The items aren’t available online but can be ordered over the phone. And items have to be seen in person before they’re available for sale.

A Long Overdue Interview

The artist was just featured in the Financial Times for his first interview in two years. On his expansive career, Ocean said, “I just do what feels authentic and what feels right for me… “I’m someone who can make someone else feel like certain things are possible.”

The singer calmly stated that he didn’t want his collection to go for prices any less than that of Cartier and that he himself was “perfectly happy wearing $3m worth of jewellery and going for a walk”.

The catalogue has also teased a collaboration with Italian luxury brand Prada, but Ocean has yet to comment on this feature. Last year, Ocean was made the new face of the luxury label, joining the ranks of other famous Prada spokesmodels Hunter Schafer and Gigi Hadid. On Prada’s recent collections, Ocean said,  “I really admire both Raf and Miuccia.”

“It’s a treat to see them play together and show us how they collaborate. I have had more conversations with Miuccia than Raf. I find her really warm and sharp-witted. She is so open-minded. Nothing about her feels jaded.”

The Beginning of a Legacy

The 33-year-old artist appeared in Time’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world when he was still in his mid-20s.

“[I chose the name] Mostly because it’s five letters and the dotcom was available”, he told the Financial Times. He also spoke on his wish to be able to develop a legacy that, like Homer (ancient Greek writer of The Iliad and The Odyssey, central works of ancient Greek literature), would allow him to carve his history into stone and to remain his own.

“It’s never lost on me that my surname [Breaux] is a by-product of slavery in the US. It’s never lost on me that I don’t have access to my real name. I can’t trace my heritage back that far, which is why I am interested in creating things that are mine, stay mine and belong to my family. Things that I can pass on.”

Frank Ocean has also been named to appear as a headliner for Coachella in 2023. No news yet on new music from the star.
