Musician FKA Twigs has become a major face in a new campaign initiative to stop and prevent violence against women and girls.
FKA Twigs is currently a leading force in new movements against domestic violence and sexual assault. The singer is fronting a campaign called Join the Chorus, created by domestic violence organisation, No More Foundation.
The campaign includes an initiative film led by FKA Twigs. It was launched at a special event during the United Nations General Assembly 2021. And it’s calling on leaders around the world to “Join The Chorus” and take make some change.
Aims of the Initiative
The campaign is a call for collective action in ending and preventing violence against women and girls. And it’s partly been sparked by the rise of domestic and sexual violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s also widely recognised that one in three women experience violence in their lifetimes.
“Only when governments, NGOs and bystanders come together to take collective action will we change the culture that has allowed violence to persist.”
said Pamela Zaballa, No More Foundation global executive director.
And FKA Twigs involvement comes after her own struggles with violence, suing her ex-partner Shia LeBeouf for domestic abuse. The British artist wrote, “This is an urgent global call to action and a human rights crisis. Only when we as a collective community normalise the conversation and insist on NO MORE violence against women will we finally end one of society’s most harmful ills. I am proud to be part of this global movement for change.”
To add, as part of Domestic Violence Awareness month, No More has to-do lists in order to take individual action and measure progress as well as educative tools and material to share to family and friends.
Ultimately, No More is urging leaders, communities, and individuals to #JoinTheChorus and take action to the address the pandemic-related violence surge, and all violence of women and girls.
The Campaign
“Join the Chorus” is a joint project by NO MORE Foundation and The Commonwealth Secretariat. Led by FKA Twigs, the campaign has been launched in 54 countries across the world. And it’s gaining more and more support every day.
The campaign features an animation with FKA Twigs. The video was created by GentleForces for the campaign’s aims to raise awareness and call for collective action to stop gender-based violence. The video is based on the fable of ‘The Flock’. The story tells us of a bird that gets trapped in a tree by a perpetrator of violence. And the bird is only able to break free with the help of her entire community of birds.
“By creating a fable, we can turn a complex issue into a simple call-to-action, and unearth what’s been typically seen as a private issue into everybody’s issue, and this is what domestic violence needs help with.”
said Danni Mohammed, founder of GentleForces.
Similarly, No More Foundation global executive director Pamela Zaballa hopes the campaign will foster increased action. She said, “It is imperative to press world leaders gathering for UNGA to prioritise ending domestic and sexual violence while also engaging the public through powerful storytelling.”
And the story emphasises their main goal that “while one voice might go unheard, a chorus cannot be ignored.” There are also additional versions of the animation voiced by Rose Byrne, Thandiwe Newton, Joselyn Dumas and Mahira Khan for each region of the commonwealth.
Undoubtedly, the initiative comes at a necessary time. And soon the Secretariat will provide a new toolkit to leaders around the world as a guide for meeting gender equality under Sustainable Development Goal 5 and its target for the elimination of violence against women and girls.
