Netflix has given us our first glimpse of Julia Garner as German con-queen Anna Delvey in the upcoming crime drama, Inventing Anna.
Julia Garner is starring as Anna Delvey in the upcoming Netflix drama Inventing Anna. The series is based on the shockingly true story and life of Russian-born German fraudster Anna Sorokin. And it’s produced by the American TV producer and screenwriter Shonda Rhimes, best known for her work on Greys Anatomy. Rhimes’ company Shondaland was also instrumental in Netflix smash-hit Bridgerton.
Partially inspired by the Jessica Pressler article How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People, the series covers the fraudulent life of socialite Anna Sorokin (Delvey) as she pulls off one of the biggest scams in recent history. In the mid-2010s Sorokin conned some of New York’s wealthiest out of hundreds and thousands of dollars. She did so by posing as a German heiress with a supposed $60 million trust fund. She lived out a glamourous life among the rich and famous before her arrest in 2017.
The series reflects on the intense highs and lows of Annas life from profligacy to prison, taking the angle of an investigative journalist.
Following Sorokin’s conviction, her criminal antics are now being played out in the series that is set to be released in early 2022.
