Australian Women’s Film Festival is Now Open for Entries!

Entries are currently open for the Australian Women’s Film Festival. If you identify as female and you’re interested or involved in film-making – or know someone who is – then this is a great opportunity to have your work exposed to an audience!

After a successful inaugural festival earlier in the year, the Australian Women’s Film Festival is now accepting entries for its second year. Aiming to take place in March 2022, entries are open from now until February 15th. The festival aims to support, encourage and celebrate female storytellers by giving them a platform to showcase their talents, both in front of and behind the camera.

The key conditions of entry to the Australian Women’s Film Festival (AWFF) are:

– At least three out of five of the key creatives (that is, writer, director, producer, director of photography, and editor) must identify as female. This is designed as a way to encourage the inclusion and participation of women in an industry that is traditionally male dominated. Men are not excluded from entering AWFF, but they must be willing to work with women.

– The film must not exceed 15 minutes in length.

– The film must pass the Bechdel test. For the uninitiated, the conditions of the Bechdel test are:

1. It has to have at least two (named) female characters in it.

2. These characters must have a sustained conversation.

3. Said conversation must not be about something other than a man.

Prizes & Judging Panel

One of the primary goals of AWFF is to continue supporting female filmmakers to do what they do best – tell great stories. With this in mind, the winner of the Best Film at AWFF 2022 will receive a big leg-up for their next project. A $10,000 rental package from VA Hire, and a $5,000 post-production package from Spectrum Films.

The judging panel for this round of the AWFF includes Phoebe Tonkin of Tomorrow, When the War Began and The Vampire Diaries fame. It also includes luminary film critic and all-around legend Margaret Pomeranz. Rounding out the panel is up and coming First Nations actor and comedian Nakkiah Lui, and Amanda Duthie, the current head of scripted programming at Stan.

This is an event worthy of your support, so please, spread the word and make sure you let any driven, talented female creatives in your social circle know about this festival!
