Anime director Hayao Miyazaki is coming out of retirement to make a new feature-length animated film.
In an interview with the New York Times, Miyazaki did not give a lot of details about the film. All he said was that it will be based on Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 book How Do You Live? It is the director’s favourite novel, based on a boy who lives in Tokyo but moves in with his uncle after his father dies. The director didn’t confirm if the film would have the same name as the book.
On being asked why was he returning from this retirement he said, “Because I want to.” Studio Ghibli co-founder and producer Toshio Suzuki described the new film as “fantasy on a grand scale.”
Though, this is not the first time Miyazaki has returned from retirement. He last retired in 2013 after having directed 11 features in 34 years – which includes – The Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and The Wind Rises.
After such amazing anime films, the expectations are high. We can’t wait to see what Miyazaki does next.
