Iconic British rock band, The Cure, have announced a 44-date tour of the UK and Europe, beginning October 6th in Riga, Latvia and culminating in huge arena shows at London’s SSE Arena Wembley on December 11. Simon Gallup, who briefly quit the band in August this year, has been confirmed as part of the line-up.
According to reports, fans will be treated to an expansive 135-minute show. In a tweet to fans, Robert Smith also confirmed that dates for the rest of the world were being finalised, with that leg of the tour likely to take place in 2023. He also promised the tour would include songs from the long-gestating new album, as yet untitled. The news follows the band also confirming the new album would be 67 minutes. Speaking on it previously, it has been described as their “most intense, saddest, and most emotional record.”
A Long Time Coming
Speaking to NME in 2019, Smith expressed a desire to be finished with the “merciless” new album that year – 11 years after its predecessor – and added it had the working title of Live from the Moon, and that it was one of three new albums in the works from the band. A year later, keyboardist Roger O’Donnell told Classic Pop magazine what fans can expect from the band’s new material, and how he and Smith had felt the pressure after a decade of not making any new music.
“Four years ago, I said to Robert, ‘We have to make one more record,” O’Donnell said. “It has to be the most intense, saddest, most dramatic and most emotional record we’ve ever made, and then we can just walk away from it.’ He agreed. Listening to the demos, it is that record. I think everybody will be happy with it.”
He continued: “The problem is, it’s 12 years since the last album so it becomes precious. When you’ve got a back catalogue like The Cure, it’s a lot to live up to. Robert has said, ‘if The Cure say any more, it had better be important and it had better be fucking good’. It is, it’s going to be an amazing record. I just suggest a little patience.”
