TRUE BEAUTY. Beauty is said to be ‘skin deep’. The first attested use of ‘skin-deep’ was in “A Wife,” a 1613 poem by Sir Thomas Overbury: “All the carnal beauty of my wife, Is but skin-deep.” Its publication infamously resulted in Overbury’s murder when its subject deduced that it was about her. So beauty can be a touchy subject. Beauty is also an amorphous concept. It means something different to everyone, which may be why Plato famously said; “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder” And how we perceive beauty—whether it’s in a person’s face, a sunrise, a daisy—reflects, to some degree, who we are.
In “TRUE BEAUTY”, we attempt to unravel the many mysteries of our beauty obsession. We explore our fascination with beauty throughout history, it’s evolution through the centuries, to try and understand beauty, the many mysteries of attraction, and their impact on the human condition. On one hand beauty can enhance our self-esteem and confidence, on the other, the negative forces at play can have damaging side effects for vulnerable young people when it gets out of control.

What defines TRUE BEAUTY today? Beauty standards stem as far back as Ancient Egyptian times. This is where society starts to view things like the symmetry of the face as important… And we haven’t changed much. Humanity, as a whole, is always striving for something more. These days, women try to achieve symmetrical beauty via cosmetic procedures, smooth skin, and perfectly shaped brows. How have unrealistic ideas carried over to impact the youth and society today?
For that, you need to attempt to define TRUE BEAUTY. As a whole, we are always striving for perfection. We still feel the effects of the anorexia endemic, born of the supermodel aesthetic of the 80s and 90s, for example. Meanwhile, the ubiquity of social media in our lives plays a role here, too. To project the image of a perfect lifestyle and body is demonstrated consistently on little squares on our Instagram feeds. It is like a huge puppeteer that dictates how we view and comprehend reality. How we should look. How we should want to look.

Youthful and flawless beauty is a forever unreachable goal of the 21st century. However, there is a glimmer of change occurring within the framework of our shared notions of beauty. The increasing absence of uniform beauty is most obvious in the changing face of the fashion industry. Has society, as a whole, reflected and understood the impossibility of perfection? Are we still living in a world wherein beauty defines us? FIB’s upcoming series, “TRUE BEAUTY”, explores the mystery surrounding beauty in a world which strives to be perfect.
